Hello again! The last couple of posts were focused on figuring out who we are. Now we need to figure out how to accept that. This leads us into step 2, self-acceptance.
So what is self-acceptance? Well, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary self-acceptance is “the act or state of understanding and recognizing one’s own abilities and limitations.” This is why step 1 is important. We have to look at our abilities which will probably shed light on some of our limitations as well.
As I worked through the last couple of topics myself, one of my limitations really stood out to me. I have a lack of patience at times. Now, I don’t necessarily like that about myself. However, we don’t have to like these parts of ourselves to accept them. Isn’t there a saying that acceptance is the first step towards change?
So knowing what we have and what we lack is crucial in accepting ourselves. But how do we do that? Well, we can start by forgiving ourselves. Although we’ve made mistakes, those mistakes led us to where we are now and can help us get to where we want to be.
The next step is self-love. This is where we acknowledge our true value by treating ourselves with kindness and compassion. We can do this by talking positively about ourselves. This could be in the form of writing affirmations on the bathroom mirror or repeating them to yourself on your commute to work. Whatever works! But it’s important to make them a part of your routine. By doing this you are focusing on finding worth within yourself and not from outside sources. And the more you do it, the more you will believe it!
Until next time
