Preventative Care: Men’s Edition
June is Men’s Health Month. A month dedicated to educating and encouraging men to make healthy lifestyle choices. These include regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and keeping up to date on preventative care.
But what is preventative care? Preventative care consists of things you can do before you get sick to stay healthy or decrease your risk of getting an illness or disease. This includes obtaining a yearly physical, checking your blood pressure, and getting a colonoscopy. However, men are 50% less likely to seek medical attention, let alone preventative medicine than women.
Why is that the case? In one study, 65% of men stated they avoid going to the doctor due to being too busy, thinking whatever is wrong will get better by itself, and feeling weak if they go. These thoughts are doing men a real injustice because they are more likely to suffer from most of the leading causes of death than women, with heart disease, cancer, and stroke being a few.
So how can we get men to prioritize their health and go in for preventative care appointments? One beneficial way is to keep encouraging them. Encouraging your male loved ones is one of the best ways to get them to see a provider and can make a big difference in their health!
