Menstrual Health Awareness Month
Menstrual Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to change the conversation around the menstrual cycle, not viewing it as a monthly inconvenience, but recognizing it as an important reflection of overall health. The menstrual cycle provides valuable insight into hormonal balance, metabolic function, and reproductive wellness, making it a meaningful indicator of the body’s internal health.
At Connect, we teach FEMM (Fertility Education and Medical Management), a Fertility Awareness-Based Method (FABM) that combines fertility awareness education with medical management to better understand reproductive and whole-body health. FEMM emphasizes the importance of body literacy, helping women recognize and interpret the physiologic patterns of their own cycles.
Cycle charting is a valuable clinical and educational tool that goes beyond the achievement or avoidance of pregnancy. Tracking biomarkers such as cervical mucus, bleeding patterns, cycle length, and ovulation can help identify hormonal shifts, recognize patterns in symptoms and energy levels, and detect concerns such as anovulation, thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, inflammation, or other hormonal imbalances. By understanding these patterns, women are empowered to take a more active role in their healthcare and recognize reproductive health as an essential part of whole-body wellness.
The Cycle as a Fifth Vital Sign
Get Curious...
Just as clinicians monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature, the menstrual cycle can provide important information about the body’s physiologic state. Irregular cycles, painful periods, absent ovulation, or abnormal bleeding should not simply be dismissed as “normal variations” but viewed as signals that deserve further evaluation.
Let's look into it...
At Connect, we take a root-cause approach to menstrual health by looking beyond symptom suppression and working to identify underlying physiologic imbalances. Concerns such as irregular cycles, heavy or painful periods, PMS or PMDD, acne, hirsutism, and infertility may be connected to hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, inflammation, or stress-related cortisol dysregulation.
Take a step towards health...
A healthy menstrual cycle depends on coordinated hormonal signaling throughout the body. Estrogen supports follicular development and tissue growth, while progesterone helps stabilize the uterine lining and supports mood, sleep, and metabolism. Insulin and cortisol also play an important role in ovulation and ovarian function. When these systems become disrupted, patterns such as anovulation, luteal phase defects, or estrogen dominance can occur, many of which may be identified through cycle charting and targeted laboratory evaluation.
Lifestyle and Menstrual Health
The Role of Nutrition and Stress Management
Menstrual health is also deeply connected to lifestyle and metabolic health. Foundational strategies such as balanced nutrition, blood sugar regulation, stress management, and restorative sleep can significantly impact hormonal balance and cycle health.
Adequate protein, healthy fats, and key micronutrients such as iron, magnesium, and B vitamins help support hormone production and overall physiologic function. Managing stress is equally important, as chronic stress can disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis and interfere with ovulation and cycle regularity.
Reframing “Normal”
Many women are told that painful, irregular, or absent cycles are simply part of being female. From a FEMM and integrative health perspective, these symptoms should not be ignored. A healthy menstrual cycle should generally be predictable, ovulatory, and not excessively painful or disruptive to daily life. It should also support a relatively stable mood, energy, and overall well-being.
When symptoms fall outside of these patterns, they warrant thoughtful evaluation and individualized care.
A Call to Awareness
This Menstrual Health Awareness Month, the goal is not only education, but a broader shift in how menstrual health is understood and addressed. Menstrual health is whole-body health. By listening to the cycle and addressing root causes, we can move toward care that supports and restores normal physiology rather than simply masking symptoms
Cycle Charting as a Clinical Tool
Standardized cycle charting provides valuable information for both patients and clinicians by helping identify ovulation, detect hormonal abnormalities, appropriately time laboratory testing, and monitor response to treatment over time. Beyond its clinical value, charting also helps women develop a deeper understanding of their own physiology and recognize patterns within their health.
